Ruschcutters Bay was previously known as ‘Rush Cutting Bay’ due to the land being swampy and overgrown with tall rushes. These rushes were used by the early settlers to thatch their own homes. Six acres of the land was reserved as a recreation area in 1878 and, in 1885, Rushcutters Bay Park was opened. The Sydney Stadium once had its home in Rushcutters Bay.
